Donna's Journey to 'Joy'
My journey into skincare didn’t begin in a spa or a classroom, it began with my family.
I grew up as the middle child of five sisters in a household that often faced financial hardship. Life was simple and we didn’t have many material things, but it taught me the importance of appreciating the small things and finding strength in difficult times.
School was never easy for me. I struggled academically and often felt like I didn’t quite belong. For many years I couldn’t understand why learning seemed so much harder for me than it did for others.
Everything changed when I was 27 and decided to take a leap of faith and return to college to study beauty therapy. During that time I discovered I had dyslexia, which finally explained so many of the challenges I had faced growing up. But something else happened during those years too, I discovered my passion for skincare.
As a student with what my lecturer kindly described as “mature skin,” I became fascinated by understanding how skin works and how the right products and techniques can truly transform it. For the first time, learning felt exciting and natural to me. I immersed myself in studying ingredients, skin health and practical treatments, and I realised I had finally found something I was truly passionate about.
As I began working with clients, I started noticing something interesting. Many people weren’t prioritising their skin — not because they didn’t care, but because they felt overwhelmed, didn’t have the time, or simply didn’t know where to start. At the same time, I was seeing younger and younger people becoming worried about their skin and caught up in complicated routines.
That really shaped how I view skincare. I believe it should be simple, supportive and accessible to everyone.
My mission has always been to help people feel comfortable and confident in their own skin, regardless of their age or gender. Skincare doesn’t need to be complicated or intimidating — it should be effective, affordable and realistic for everyday life.
For nine wonderful years I worked with Younique, where I became known as the “Skincare Queen” among my peers. During that time I trained, supported and shared my knowledge with thousands of people through online training, consultations, live videos and skincare education. I built an incredible community and truly loved helping people understand and care for their skin.
Then one day everything changed.
The skincare products I had built my business around were suddenly discontinued. Overnight, the foundation of my work disappeared and I found myself at a crossroads. I had to decide whether to walk away from everything I had built, or take a leap and create something of my own. I chose to start again.
With more than 20 years of experience as a beauty therapist, I knew I still had the knowledge, passion and drive to continue helping people achieve healthy, glowing skin. So I created my own skincare brand, built on everything I believe skincare should be: effective, affordable, easy to use, and focused on real skin needs rather than trends or hype.
The brand is deeply personal to me and is named after my mum, Joy, who has always been the heart of our family. Our brand identity reflects that story. The heart symbol represents my mum as the centre of our family, the crown represents my nickname as the “Skincare Queen,” and the hearts above the crown represent me and my sisters.
Today I’m grateful to still be doing what I love most — connecting with people, sharing honest skincare advice and helping others feel confident and comfortable in their own skin.
At the heart of everything I do is my family. My husband Ray has been my constant supporter and partner through every chapter of life. We married young and built our world together while raising our two wonderful children, Rosie, now 27, and Lewis, 21. Being a close-knit family has always been incredibly important to us, and those early years of growing together shaped the bond we still share today. Now that Rosie and Lewis are forging their own paths, Ray and I have embraced a new season of life—one that includes travelling as often as we can, exploring new places together and making the most of the freedom that comes with watching your children grow into remarkable adults
Through Joy Skincare, I hope to continue building something meaningful — a place where skincare feels simpler, kinder and genuinely supportive, and where everyone can experience the joy of healthy, radiant skin.
